Alice Sung, AIA, LEED AP, BD+C, ISSP-SA

Principal, Greenbank Associates

As a licensed architect with over 25 years of experience, Alice has facilitated the greening of dozens of public, private, and educational facilities, including LEED Platinum Certified buildings and CHPS Verified schools. She has led successful sustainability workshops over the last two decades, educating and inspiring hundreds of practitioners and students. Alice is a skilled facilitator, and sought-after speaker/trainer in green buildings and sustainability planning. As a former Principal and Sustainable Design Director of a Bay Area architectural firm, she understands the inner workings of design and construction processes; both the potential barriers and opportunities for industry practitioners to achieve truly sustainable practices, applied to every project type.

Championing green schools for the past fifteen years, her work includes: one of the first CHPS- rated schools, and first CHPS Verified Leader in the nation, participation in the development of the State of California’s Division of State Architect’s ‘Grid Neutral’ program, and serving on the CA-CHPS Steering and National Technical Advisory Committees. She has been a longtime member of the AIA, USGBC, the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI), and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), serving in many leadership positions.

Alice is Principal of Greenbank Associates, a green building/sustainability consultancy she founded in 2004. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from UC Berkeley, with Highest Honors, a Master of Architecture from MIT, LEED Accreditation with BD+C specialty, and ISSP-Sustainability Associate credentials from the International Society of Sustainability Professionals. Working as a change agent, she assists teams in driving to zero net energy (ZNE), water reuse, and zero carbon footprints, through ZNE/low carbon new construction and hopes to accelerate deep energy retrofits to ZNE with de-carbonization of existing building portfolios. Quantifying the embedded carbon avoided through adaptive reuse of existing buildings is an emerging concern, and of increasing importance to the ultimate resilience of our communities. Her goal is to facilitate organizational sustainability, as broadly as possible, to SCALE, to leverage persistent, significant GHG reductions, as quickly as possible. Alice has been trained as a Master S-CORE* assessor through ISSP, and offers sustainability assessment, policy development, planning, program implementation, and reporting assistance for all types of organizations.
